The date of the Mahābhārata War - Evidence of the Vedic Literature

Dr. H. A. Phadke

The importance of the Bhārata War date for the chronological reconstruction of ancient India cannot be denied. In fact, it would provide a starting point for the chronology of the events occurring before and after it. Although there still exists much diversity of scholarly opinion on the issue, it is possible, as shown by the recent controversy, to reinforce the literary evidences with archaeological finds and to arrive at a reasonable date for the War.

The problem has been studied on the basis of evidence - archaeological as well as literary. We shall deal with the Vedic literature and its bearing on the date of the Bhārata War.

A Vaṁśa or list of teachers given at the end of the Kauṣitaki or Śāṅkhāyana Āraṇyaka1 shows that Guṇākhya Āaṅkhāyana was separated by two generations from the time of Uddālaka. From the list given in the Śatapatha Brāmaṇa2 and the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad3 it is learnt that Uddālaka was separated by five or six generations from the time of Janamejaya. Guṇākhya, therefore, lived seven or eight generations afert Parīkṣit. He could not have flourished later than Āśvalāyana because the latter honours his guru Kahola.

H. C. Raychaudhury4 working on this line of evidence has fixed the date of Āśvalāyana in the 6th century B.C. on the basis of his association with Kosala, his contemporaneity with Gautama Buddha and Pakuda Kachhāyana and his mention as master of Katubha or Kalpa or rituals. His contemporary Śāṅkhāyana therefore, may also be assinged the same period. From this date, counting back eight or nine generations and taking an average of about 30 years per teacher between Parīkṣit and Śāṅkhāyana the accesion of Parīkṣit and also the Bhārata. War according to the distinguished historian may be placed in the 9th century B.C. Butthe main difficulty in this line of investigation is that it is base entirely on the identification of the Āśvalāyana - the famous Sūtrakāra, with the Āśvalāyana of the Majjhima Nikāya and a contemporary of Buddha. This is by no means certain. It is quite likely that there were actually two Āśvalāyana of which only the earliest one is to be considered in connection with the date of the Bhārata War.

It may be pointed out that Śāṅkhāyana and Āśvalāyana are the two earliest authorites who have been referred to in connection with the historicity and the date of Mahābhārata. Śāṅkhāyana while referring to a sacrificial error mentions a battle in which the Kurus were driven out of Kurukṣetra5. It would be of interest to note that while commenting on this evidence the authors of Vedic Index, Macdonell and Keith (one of the protagonist of the view that Bhārata War is a myth) state that this possibly adumbrates the misfortune of the Kauravas in the epic tradition. Āśvalāyana6 speaks of Vaiśampāyana as Mahābhāratācārya which shows its awareness of the epic story. It is not necessary to quote the tradition which continues till today, but suffice it would be so say that it was known to Pāṇini7 and also to Kauṭilya who refers to the grief of Duryodhana for his usurpation of (another's) share of kingdom8

The religious character of the Veic texts according to some is the reason why the Bhārata War does not find mention in them. It can be shown for example, by the description of the battle of the ten kings that the Vedic sages were not altogether indifferent to political happenings. Since Vyāsa the traditional compiler of the Vedas and a contemporary of the battle had composed an independent work, known as Jaya (or victory) on the subject, there was hardly any neccessity of its mention in the early Vedic literature.

The early Vedic literature suggests still another line of inquiry. It refers to a number of Bharata-Puru-Kuru line who are known to the Mahābhārata as ancestors and predecessors of Parīkṣit. These rulers are Purūravas, Aila, Āyu, Yayāti, Nāhuṣeya, Puru, Bharata, Dauḥṣanti, Ajāmīḍha, Ṛkṣa. Samavaraṇa, Pratīpa, Balhīka Pratiplva, Śantanu and Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Vaichitravīrya. Of these Śantanu and Dhṛtarāṣṭra are important in respect of their near contemporaneity to the Bhārata War.

This Śantanu was in all probability the great grandfather of the Kauravas and the Pāṇḍavas because of the fact that the abdication of his brother Devāpi is well known to the Purāṇic and epic tradition. It has been shown by Pargiter9 that Devāpi and Śantanu have been wrongly mentioned as sons of Pratīpa, who was their grandfather. Their father Ṛṣṭiṣena had probably died earlier and so omitted in the Purāṇic genealogy. There is also Dhṛtarāṣṭra Vaichitravīrya in the Kāṭhaka Saṁhitā of the Yajurveda10. This ruler could only be the grandson of Śantanu and son of Vaichitravīrya well known to the Mahābhārata and also to the Purāṇic traditions as father of the Kauravas... (Age of Bhārata War, by Dr. H. A. Phadke, pags 218-220).

Dr. H. A. Phadke
