ATIS ó ATTYS. Dios de los antiguos frigios del Asia Menor. Según la leyenda era un pastor del cual se enamoró la diosa Cibeles y enloquecido por ésta al saber Cibeles que Atis había faltado a su promesa de conservarse puro- se castró y desangró hasta morir. Después la diosa lo transformó en pino. El culto de Atis se extendió por Occidente junto al de Cibeles y en su honor se realizaban ceremonias de iniciación (Misterios Frigios). El emperador Claudio introdujo el culto del pino sagrado en la religin oficial.

ATISHA (979-1054). Buddhista indio. Nació en Bengala y tras haber vivido en Afganistán y Birmania se convirtió en monje del buddhismo Vajrayana a la edad de treinta años. Fue profesor en la Universidad de Vikramashila y hacia 1039 viajó al Tíbet para dar impulso al buddhismo. Allí completó las enseñanzas tántricas introducidas por Padmasambhava. Su tumba se encuentra en Lhasa.

William Walker Atkinson

William Walker Atkinson (December 5, 1862 – November 22, 1932) was an attorney, merchant, publisher, and author, as well as an occultist and an American pioneer of the New Thought movement. He is also known to have been the author of the pseudonymous works attributed to Theron Q. Dumont and Yogi Ramacharaka.[1]
Due in part to Atkinson's intense personal secrecy and extensive use of pseudonyms, he is now largely forgotten, despite having written more than 100 books in the last 30 years of his life. (He obtained mention in past editions of Who's Who in America, Religious Leaders of America, and several similar publications—-but these are mostly subscription based, and reflect more on his desire to be known than his contemporary fame.) His works have remained in print more or less continuously since 1900.[2][3]
