The Twenty-sixth Chapter describes how a sinful man goes to different hells, where he is punished in various ways by the assistants of Yamarāja. As stated in the Bhagavad-gītā (3.27):

prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni
guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ
ahaṅkāra-vimūḍhātmā
kartāham iti manyate

“The bewildered spirit soul, under the influence of the three modes of material nature, thinks himself to be the doer of activities, which are in actuality carried out by nature.” The foolish person thinks he is independent of any law. He thinks there is no God or regulative principle and that he can do whatever he likes. Thus he engages in different sinful activities, and as a result, he is put into different hellish conditions life after life, to be punished by the laws of nature. The basic principle of his suffering is that he foolishly thinks himself independent, although he is strictly under the control of the laws of material nature. These laws act due to the influence of the three modes of nature, and therefore each human being also works under three different types of influence. According to how he acts, he suffers different reactions in his next life or in this life. Religious persons act differently from atheists, and therefore they suffer different reactions.

Śukadeva Gosvāmī describes the following twenty-eight hells: Tāmisra, Andhatāmisra, Raurava, Mahāraurava, Kumbhīpāka. Kālasūtra, Asi-patravana, Sūkaramukha, Andhakūpa, Kṛmibhojana. Sandaṁśa, Taptasūrmi, Vajrakaṇṭaka-śālmalī, Vaitaraṇī, Pūyoda, Prāṇarodha, Viśasana, Lālābhakṣa, Sārameyādana, Avīci, Ayaḥpāna. Kṣārakardama, Rakṣogaṇa-bhojana, Śūlaprota, Dandaśūka. Avaṭa-nirodhana, Paryāvartana and Sūcīmukha.

A person who steals another’s money, wife or possessions is put into the hell known as Tāmisra. A man who tricks someone and enjoys his wife is put into the extremely hellish condition known as Andhatāmisra. A foolish person absorbed in the bodily concept of life, who on the basis of this principle maintains himself or his wife and children by committing violence against other living entities, is put into the hell known as Raurava. There the animals he killed take birth as creatures called rurus and cause great suffering for him. Those who kill different animals and birds and then cook them are put by the agents of Yamarāja into the hell known as Kumbhīpāka, where they are boiled in oil. A person who kills a brāhmaṇa is put into the hell known as Kālasūtra, where the land, perfectly level and made of copper, is as hot as an oven. The killer of a brāhmaṇa burns in that land for many years. One who does not follow scriptural injunctions but who does everything whimsically or follows some rascal is put into the hell known as Asi-patravana. A government official who poorly administers justice, or who punishes an innocent man, is taken by the assistants of Yamarāja to the hell known as Sūkaramukha, where he is mercilessly beaten.

God has given advanced consciousness to the human being. Therefore he can feel the suffering and happiness of other living beings. The human being bereft of his conscience, however, is prone to cause suffering for other living beings. The assistants of Yamarāja put such a person into the hell known as Andhakūpa, where he receives proper punishment from his victims. Any person who does not receive or feed a guest properly but who personally enjoys eating is put into the hell known as Kṛmibhojana. There an unlimited number of worms and insects continuously bite him.

A thief is put into the hell known as Sandaṁśa. A person who has sexual relations with a woman who is not to be enjoyed is put into the hell known as Taptasūrmi. A person who enjoys sexual relations with animals is put into the hell known as Vajrakaṇṭaka-śālmalī. A person born into an aristocratic or highly placed family but who does not act accordingly is put into the hellish trench of blood, pus and urine called the Vaitaraṇī River. One who lives like an animal is put into the hell called Pūyoda. A person who mercilessly kills animals in the forest without sanction is put into the hell called Prāṇarodha. A person who kills animals in the name of religious sacrifice is put into the hell named Viśasana. A man who forces his wife to drink his semen is put into the hell called Lālābhakṣa. One who sets a fire or administers poison to kill someone is put into the hell known as Sārameyādana. A man who earns his livelihood by bearing false witness is put into the hell known as Avīci.

A person addicted to drinking wine is put into the hell named Ayaḥpāna. One who violates etiquette by not showing proper respect to superiors is put into the hell known as Kṣārakardama. A person who sacrifices human beings to Bhairava is put into the hell called Rakṣogaṇa-bhojana. A person who kills pet animals is put into the hell called Śūlaprota. A person who gives trouble to others is put into the hell known as Dandaśūka. One who imprisons a living entity within a cave is put into the hell known as Avaṭa-nirodhana. A person who shows unwarranted wrath toward a guest in his house is put into the hell called Paryāvartana. A person maddened by possessing riches and thus deeply absorbed in thinking of how to collect money is put into the hell known as Sūcīmukha.

After describing the hellish planets, Śukadeva Gosvāmī describes how pious persons are elevated to the highest planetary system, where the demigods live, and how they then come back again to this earth when the results of their pious activities are finished. Finally he describes the universal form of the Lord and glorifies the Lord’s activities.

El Capítulo 26 habla de los infiernos, en donde los asistentes de Yamarāja aplican diversos castigos a los hombres pecaminosos. Como se afirma en la Bhagavad- gītā (3.27):

«El alma espiritual que está confundida por la influencia del ego falso, se cree la autora de actividades que en realidad son ejecutadas por las tres modalidades de la naturaleza material». Los necios creen que son independientes de toda clase de leyes. No creen en Dios ni en ningún principio regulador, y piensan que pueden actuar como les guste. De ese modo, se ocupan en diversas actividades pecaminosas, como resultado de las cuales tienen que sufrir vida tras vida el castigo de las leyes de la naturaleza en distintas condiciones infernales. El principio básico de sus sufrimientos es su necedad de considerarse independientes a pesar de estar bajo el estricto control de las leyes de la naturaleza material. Esas leyes actúan debido a la influencia de las tres modalidades de la naturaleza; por esa razón, los seres humanos también actúan bajo tres tipos distintos de influencias, y en función de cómo actúen sufren distintas reacciones en su siguiente vida o en su vida actual. Las actividades de las personas religiosas y las actividades de los ateos son distintas; debido a ello, las reacciones que tienen que sufrir también son distintas.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī describe los veintiocho infiernos siguientes: Tāmisra, Andhatāmisra, Raurava, Mahāraurava, Kumbhīpāka, Kālasūtra, Asi-patravana, Sūkaramukha, Andhakūpa, Kṛmibhojana, Sandaṁśa, Taptasūrmi, Vajrakaṇṭaka- śālmalī, Vaitaraṇī, Pūyoda, Prāṇarodha, Viśasana, Lālābhakṣa, Sārameyādana, Avīci, Ayaḥpāna, Kṣārakardama, Rakṣogaṇa-bhojana, Śūlaprota, Dandaśūka, Avaṭa-nirodhana, Paryāvartana y Sūcīmukha.
La persona que roba las propiedades, el dinero o la esposa de otro, padece en el infierno Tāmisra. El que engaña a alguien para difrutar de su esposa padece en los terribles tormentos de Andhatāmisra. El necio que está absorto en el concepto corporal de la vida, y que se apoya en ese principio para procurarse el sustento y mantener a su esposa y a sus hijos cometiendo violencia contra otras entidades vivientes, tiene que sufrir en el infierno Raurava, donde los animales que él mismo mató nacen en forma de rurus, unas criaturas que le causan grandes sufrimientos. Los que matan animales y aves para cocinarlos son arrastrados por los agentes de Yamarāja al infierno Kumbhīpāka, donde son hervidos en aceite. La persona que mata a un brāhmaṇa desciende al infierno Kālasūtra, cuya superficie de cobre es completamente plana y caliente como un horno. Quien mata a un brāhmaṇa arde en ese lugar durante muchos años. El que no sigue los mandamientos de las Escrituras, sino que lo hace todo de modo caprichoso o sigue a algún sinvergüenza, cae al infierno de Asi-patravana. El funcionario del gobierno que administra mal la justicia o castiga a un inocente es llevado por los asistentes de Yamarāja al infierno Sūkaramukha, donde se le golpea sin piedad.
Dios ha dado al ser humano un nivel de conciencia avanzado, que le permite sentir el sufrimiento y la felicidad de otros seres vivos. Sin embargo, el ser humano que carece de ese nivel de conciencia siente inclinación por hacer sufrir a otros seres vivos. A esa persona, los ayudantes de Yamarāja la hacen descender al infierno Andhakūpa, donde sus propias víctimas le castigan como merece. La persona que no recibe ni alimenta como es debido a un visitante, con la idea de disfrutar ella sola de la comida, cae al infierno de Kṛmibhojana, donde un número ilimitado de insectos y gusanos le muerden sin cesar.
Los ladrones van al infierno conocido con el nombre de Sandaṁśa. La persona que tiene relaciones sexuales con una mujer de la que no debería disfrutar, sufre en el infierno Taptasūrmi. Aquel que tienen relaciones sexuales con animales sufre en el infierno de Vajrakaṇṭaka-śālamalī. Una persona que nace en una familia aristocrática o de alta posición social, pero que no se comporta como se espera de ella, se hunde en la fosa de sangre, pus y orina que recibe el nombre de río Vaitaraṇī. Quien vive como un animal tiene que padecer en el infierno Pūyoda. La persona despiadada que mata animales en el bosque sin estar autorizada a ello desciende al infierno Prāṇarodha. El que mata animales con el pretexto de realizar un sacrificio religioso desciende al infierno Viśasana. El hombre que obliga a su esposa a beber su semen tiene que pasar por el infierno Lālābhakṣa. El que provoca un incendio o administra veneno a alguien para matarle tendrá que sufrir en el infierno Sārameyādana. Aquel que se gana la vida como testigo falso padece en el infierno Avīci.
La persona adicta al vino cae al infierno Ayaḥpāna. El que infringe las normas de cortesía y no muestra el debido respeto a sus superiores desciende al infierno de Kṣārakardama. La persona que ofrece sacrificios humanos a Bhairava sufre en el infierno Rakṣogaṇa-bhojana. El que mata a un animal doméstico sufre en el infierno Śūlaprota. Quien causa problemas a otros desciende al infierno Dandaśūka. El que encierra a una entidad viviente en una cueva tiene que sufrir en el infierno Avaṭa-nirodhana. La persona que manifiesta una ira injustificada hacia un huésped en su casa desciende al infierno Paryāvartana. La persona que tiene un intenso deseo de poseer riquezas y está profundamente absorta en el pensamiento de cómo conseguir dinero, desciende al infierno Sūcīmukha.
Después de describir los planetas infernales, Śukadeva Gosvāmī explica que las personas piadosas se elevan a los sistemas planetarios superiores, donde viven los semidioses, para de nuevo regresar a la Tierra cuando consumen todos los resultados de sus actividades piadosas. Por último, describe la forma universal del Señor y glorifica las actividades del Señor.
