Śrī Guru-vandanā from Śrīla Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura’s Prema-bhakti-candrikā

Śrī Guru-vandanā from Śrīla Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura’s Prema-bhakti-candrikā

His Divine Grace Oṁ Viṣṇupāda paramahaṁsa parivrājakācārya aṣṭottara-śata  Śrī Śrīmad Gour Govinda Gosvāmī Mahārāja

Śrī Guru-vandanā from Śrīla Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura’s Prema-bhakti-candrikā

śrī guru-caraṇa-padma, kevala bhakati-sadma,
vando mui sāvadhāna mate
jāhāra prasāde bhai, e bhava toriyā jāi,
kṛṣṇa-prāpti hoya jāhā ha’te

The lotus feet of the spiritual master are the only way to attain pure devotional service. I bow to his lotus feet with great awe and reverence. By his grace one can cross the ocean of material suffering and obtain the mercy of Kṛṣṇa

guru-mukha-padma-vākya, cittete koriyā aikya,
āra nā koriho mane āśā
śrī guru-caraṇe rati, ei se uttamā gati,
je prasāde pūre sarva āśā

My only wish is to have my consciousness purified by the words emanating from his lotus mouth. Attachment to his lotus feet is the perfection that fulfils all desires.

cakṣu-dāna dilā jei, janme janme prabhu sei
divya-jñāna hṛde prakāśito
prema-bhakti jāhā hoite, avidyā vināśa jāte,
vede gāya jāhāra carito

He opens my darkened eyes and fills my heart with transcendental knowledge. He is my lord birth after birth. From him ecstatic prema emanates. By him ignorance is destroyed. The Vedic scriptures sing of his character.

śrī guru karuṇā-sindhu, adhama janāra bandhu,
lokanātha lokera jīvana
hā hā prabhu koro doyā, deha more pada-chāyā,
tuwā pade lainu śaraṇa

My spiritual master is the ocean of mercy, the friend of the poor, and the lord and master of the devotees. O master! Be merciful unto me! Give me the shade of your lotus feet! Your fame is spread all over the three worlds!

Introduction to Part I

Śrīla A.C. Bhaktivedānta Swami Prabhupāda, the founder-ācārya of ISKCON, was very fond of Śrīla Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura’s song Śrī Guru-vandanā. He introduced its recitation as a daily function in all ISKCON temples around the world, and he would often refer to the song in his lectures. Part I of this book consists of commentaries on this song by Śrīla Gour Govinda Swami.

Just as each and every verse, indeed, each and every syllable of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is said to have unlimited meanings:

Prati-śloke prati-akṣare nānā artha kaya
(Caitanya-Caritāmṛta, Madhya 24.318)

Similarly, the songs of Śrīla Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura have many subtle meanings.

In a lecture on Caitanya-Caritāmṛta, Madhya 20.105, Śrīla Prabhupāda revealed some of these meanings:

kṛṣṇa-śakti dhara tumi, jāna tattva-bhāva
jāni’ dārḍhya lāgi’ puche, — sādhura svabhāva

Caitanya Mahāprabhu replied to Sanātana Gosvāmī:

“Since you possess Lord Kṛṣṇa’s potency, you certainly know these things. However, it is the nature of a sadhu to inquire. Although he knows these things, the sadhu inquires for the sake of strictness.”

Sanātana Gosvāmī is Guru. Caitanya Mahāprabhu is authorising him to become Guru. This is the paramparā system. No one can all of a sudden become Guru. A self-made Guru is not Guru. Therefore Caitanya Mahāprabhu says:
kṛṣṇa-śakti dhara tumi

You possess Lord Kṛṣṇa’s potency. Here Caitanya Mahāprabhu is authorising Sanātana Gosvāmī. Unless Sanātana Gosvāmī has got the power to receive instruction, Caitanya Mahāprabhu is not going to waste His time. Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s mission is to preach Kṛṣṇa consciousness all over the world. So He is empowering Sanātana Gosvāmī to take this task and spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness. That is Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s mission. You’ll find in Caitanya-caritāmṛta the verse:

kṛṣṇa-śakti vinā nahe nāma pracāraṇa
(Caitanya-caritāmṛta Antya 7.11)

Without being empowered by Kṛṣṇa, no one can preach the holy name of the Lord. For example, even if one is a qualified lawyer he must first get the power of attorney from his client. Only then can he speak. That is the law. Similarly, without being endowed with the power of attorney from Kṛṣṇa it is not possible to preach.

Because we are preparing ourselves to preach Kṛṣṇa consciousness we must be qualified to get the power of attorney. Sometimes we say:

“I’ll preach.”

What you will preach?

First of all, get the power of attorney; then preach. Preaching is not so easy that just anyone can preach:

kṛṣṇa-śakti vinā nahe nāma pracāraṇa

To get that power of attorney one has to qualify himself. Not that the power of attorney is hanging in the tree and you can take it. No.

So how can this power of attorney be achieved?

You are singing these prayers to Guru daily:

śrī-guru-caraṇa-padma.

Today is Guru-pūrṇimā. On this day especially we should understand what the power of attorney is.

śrī-guru-caraṇa-padma,   kevala-bhakti-sadma,
bandoṅ mui sāvadhāna mate

This is the beginning. If you want to be a devotee then you must approach the spiritual master who has got the power.

Śrī-guru-caraṇa-padma,   kevala-bhakti-sadma,
bandoṅ mui sāvadhāna mate.

Sāvadhāna means very carefully, not whimsically.

jāṅhāra prasāde bhāi,       ei bhava toriyā jāi

Why should one go to a spiritual master?

Because jāṅhāra prasāde bhāi:

“My dear brother, if you get the benediction from the spiritual master...”

What is that benediction?

The benediction is not:

“Cure my disease.”

Generally, most people do not know, therefore they are cheated. The other day in Washington one lady came to me for curing some trouble with her leg. That is going on. I said:

“So you should approach a spiritual master?

There are so many doctors, hospitals. You go there.”

“No. Here you show me your miracles.”

And people are also cheating like that — showing some miracles and thus becoming God. But the miracle of the spiritual master is:

jāṅhāra prasāde bhāi, ei bhava toriyā jāi

No more material existence. The real miracle is to cross over the ocean of nescience. That is the real favour of the spiritual master. Not that you ask him to cure your leg, then walk here and there and again break your leg, and again come to Guru.

kṛṣṇa-prāpti hoy jāṅhā ha’te

The spiritual master is one who can give you Kṛṣṇa. Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura has sung:

“kṛṣṇa se tomāra, kṛṣṇa dite pāra ... dhāi tava pāche pāche
(Ohe! Vaiṣṇava Ṭhākura Śaraṇāgati, Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura)

O my spiritual master, Vaiṣṇava-ṭhākura! I am searching after Kṛṣṇa. I am just following you, sir. Because Kṛṣṇa is your property, if you like, you can deliver Him to me, ‘Take Him immediately!’”

Kṛṣṇa is not independent. He is the property of the devotee. And this is not simply flattery. It is stated in the śāstras:

vedeṣu durlabham adurlabham ātma-bhaktau
(Brahma-saṁhitā 5.33)

You cannot get Kṛṣṇa by simply studying all the Vedas. Durlabha means it is not possible.

athāpi te deva padāmbuja-dvaya-
prasāda-leśānugṛhīta eva hi
jānāti tattvaṁ bhagavan-mahimno
na cānya eko ’pi ciraṁ vicinvan
(Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.14.29)

My Lord, if one is favoured by even a slight trace of the mercy of Your lotus feet he can understand the greatness of Your personality. But those who speculate to understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead are unable to know You, even though they continue to study the Vedas for many years.

One who has got a small portion of the favour of Kṛṣṇa:

yat kāruṇya-kaṭākṣa-vaibhavavatāṁ taṁ gauram eva stumaḥ
(Caitanya-candrāmṛta 5)

Who has attained the merciful sidelong glance of Lord Gaura, he knows kṛṣṇa-tattva.

Caitanya Mahāprabhu is empowering Sanātana Gosvāmī, and we should follow in his footsteps. Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura says:

ei chay gosāi jār — mui tāro dās
tāṅ-sabāra pada-reṇu mora pañca-grās
(Nāma–Saṅkīrtana—Hari Haraye Namaḥ Kṛṣṇa 5)

I am servant of that person who has followed the six Gosvāmīs. The dust of their lotus feet is my subsistence.

guru-mukha-padma-vākya,        cittete koriyā aikya,
ār nā koriho mane āśā

We should have this determination: we must approach the real Guru, empowered Guru, who has the power of attorney. If we take his words seriously then our life is successful. Don’t spoil yourself by manufacturing ideas. Take the word from him and carry it out. Don’t bother whether you’ll be spiritually advanced or not, but take the words of the spiritual master and carry them out. Then everything is guaranteed.

śrī-guru-caraṇe rati,          ei sei uttama-gati

You may want advancement in spiritual consciousness, but it is only possible if,

śrī-guru-caraṇe rati

You keep your faith only on the lotus feet of your Guru. Then you’ll make advancement. There is no doubt about it.

je prasāde pūre sarva āśā

We have got so many desires, but if we have strong faith at the lotus feet of Guru, then everything will be fulfilled automatically.

cakhu-dān dilo jei,             janme janme prabhu sei

We are in the darkness of material existence. The Guru’s business is to open our eyes and bring us to the light. That is Guru — not that the disciple is kept in the darkness. Prabhu means master.

divya jñān hṛde prokāśito

Divya-jñāna is the transcendental knowledge that we are all servants of Kṛṣṇa and our only business is to serve Kṛṣṇa. We have become servant of so many things:

Servant of society,

Servant of community,

Servant of country,

Servant of wife,

Servant of children,

 Servant of dog, etc., etc.

“Now let me become servant of Kṛṣṇa.”

This is divya-jñāna. Dīkṣā means from this divya-jñāna. That is dī. And kṣā means kṣapayati, expands.

prema-bhakti jāṅhā hoite,          avidyā vināśa jāte,
vede gāy jāṅhāra carito

By the mercy of Guru we get prema-bhakti. In the beginning we have to discharge devotional service according to the rules and regulations of the śāstra and the instructions of Guru, śāstra-vidhi. This is known as vidhi-bhakti. Kṛṣṇa says:

yaḥ śāstra-vidhim utsṛjya
vartate kāma-kārataḥ
na sa siddhim avāpnoti
na sukhaṁ na parāṁ gatim
(Bhagavad-gītā 16.23)

“If one gives up this śāstra-vidhim, vidhi-mārga, and manufactures his own way, then:

na siddhim avāpnoti

He does not get success:

na sukham

Neither happiness;

na parāṁ gatim

And what to speak of going back to Godhead?”

When we are practiced in following vidhi-mārga then we will gradually get love of Godhead. That is the ultimate goal:

premā pum-artho mahān
(Caitanya-manjusa, Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura)

Just like in India, formerly very small, minor-aged boys and girls were married. Especially the girl was married at ten or twelve years of age.

So how can she love her husband?

She does not know how. But there is vidhi-mārga. The elderly people instruct her:

“Now, just give your husband this refreshment.”

So she gives. In this way, gradually, when she’s grown-up she does not require any instruction; she knows how to serve her husband. That is prema. But in the beginning there must be regulative principles. Unless we are free from this nescience of material existence there is no question of kṛṣṇa-prema. These two things cannot go together.

Viraktir anyatra syāt

If you are actually advanced in Kṛṣṇa consciousness then naturally you will be averse to material enjoyment.

Bhaktiḥ pareśānubhavo viraktir anyatra syāt
(Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 11.2.42)

Just like if you are eating, then naturally you are satisfying your appetite. So kṛṣṇa-bhakti means we are automatically satisfying all of our desires.

śrī-guru karuṇā-sindhu,   adhama janāra bandhu,
lokanāth lokera jīvana

Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura’s Guru’s name was Lokanātha Gosvāmī. Those who have gone to Vṛndāvana may have seen Lokanātha Go swami’s tomb.

hā hā prabhu koro doyā,             deho more pada-chāyā

We should seek the shelter of the lotus feet of Guru. It is not only sentiment that one has to become a very strong devotee of Guru. Therefore Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura has sung:

vede gāya jāṅhāra carito

Not that I am talking nonsense. It is śruti-pramāṇa; whatever we say must be supported by Vedic injunction. Then it is right.

So:

kṛṣṇa-śakti dhara tumi, jāna tattva-bhāva

Caitanya Mahāprabhu is affirming that:

“You are authorised by Kṛṣṇa. Therefore you have come for My help. My mission is to preach Kṛṣṇa consciousness.”
